Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey 2012

Lighthouses ... mystical and benevolent ... high on a cliff or lonely coast ... broadcasting a beam of light to guide ancient and modern day mariners safely into port.

The first lighthouse was built in North America in 1716, helping to direct ships into Boston Harbor.  Not long thereafter these structures doted the rocky and treacherous Atlantic coast line and became essential to the growth of commerce and expansion of the British Colonies ... soon to become the United States.

Have you ever visited a lighthouse?  Now is your chance to learn more about the rich history of these maritime beacons:  the variety of their structures, the sources of light and how it was reflected great distances, the people who manned them and the role they played in the history of New Jersey and our country.
